It was done inside pops. Particles were emitted with an offset from the surface of a rough modeled hand, and colliding with the same geometry. An additional force node was used for gravity.
It was rendered as points using direct light with raytrace shadows.

I am trying to achieve a similar effect, could you please give me some hints on how to do this in Houdini?!?!?! Is there tutorials out there for this?
